So, we decide to give the outside world a try again. Isabella is napping and Bill was good enough to stay behind with her. Cousin William said we might have better luck looking for a DVD player at a place called Gome (a chinese version of Circuit City). So we get the concierge lady to look up the closest one, write it down on a piece of paper in Chinese and off Eddie and I go. The pic above is taken in the back of the cab. Their cabs are very high tech with these video screens playing their version of CNN, music videos, advertisement and a crawl across the bottom. Too bad I can't understand most of it since I can't read Chinese or understand a lot of Mandarin, which by the way is an archaic term now. The national language is called "po tung wah". Still mandarin to me.
After Gome, Eddie says he is thirsty. We notice a Mickey D's right across the street. Our curiosity gets the best of us, so off we go. A bit hungry too, (we seem to miss lunch a lot since coming here) we get a Double Cheeseburger Value Meal, a #3. Notice the chinese writing on both the burger wrapper and the ketchup. Tastes just like the stuff at home. Aahh - finally, something we're familiar with. Eddie and I shared a #3 for $15 yuan which is less than $2 (about $1.98 when the exchange rate is 7.57) and brought Bill back a double cheeseburger and fries for $12 yuan (US$1.58).
You'll see plenty of cars on the road, looks a lot like our roads, only people drive a little more agressively. Ok, a lot mroe agressively. The other day in the bus on the way to some adoption business, the other people in the vehicle were gasping as the driver was weaving in and out of traffic. Again, to draw another comparison to NYC, these people are like 20 times worse! At one point, I noticed the cars and trucks were 5 across in a 3 lane road! There are a lot of traffic circles, and its kinda like a game of chicken to see who can get ahead first - there's definitely no yielding. I doubt that's even part of the rules of the road. The only rule that is apparent is the one who gets ahead goes first. Busses, vans, cars, big and little, motorcycles, all engaged in a big game of chicken.
This is a bus full of commuters. We did notice all the busses are LPG.
Downtown, where we are, the buildings are quite modern, like this one. There are old buildings too, but most of them look unoccupied or like they're being renovated.
